For Kariuki Gakuo…

Gakuo

One time this time I will tell about Kariuki Gakuo and we –
Of the four eyes that askance’d yesterday’s ugali,
The hands that hesitated, trembled at first then
Gingerly felt for landmines.
Of the grumbling stomachs that cared less
And a hunger that was ushered into Soyinka’s gray vault
By swaggering feet in arguing shoes.

Two and many reluctant feeders, who,
Defying head and talking with their food,
Held up Godot as she was waited.

You have finished, Master
And we have scraped our palms off Moi’s old mealie meal!

Lights!
March on Karis: burst onto God’s stage
Left centre
And rip the cloudy curtains!

  4. When icons who make the world go round exit from the world’s stage, we can only wonder of the gluttony of death. For yesterday it was the caged bard, and today, he whose poetry I breathe. For the heaven’s stage is larger than the world’s. Fare thee well and make the heavens shake.

You left too soon bro, you didn’t give us a chance to know and understand your work. Till we meet again, God give you rest and us peace.
